Lecture Schedule for the LA Art Show

Posted January 15th, 2012 by LA Art Show | 0 Comments

Entrance with show admission. The lectures will be held on the floor of the LA Art Show, Booth K340, unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, January 19
2 PM The Worlds of Hunt Slonem Lecture & Book Signing
Recalling the storied lives of 19th century naturalists and romantics, Hunt Slonem depicts both natural subjects—including birds, rabbits, and butterflies—and portraits—such as saints, Rudolf Valentino, Billie Holiday, and Abraham Lincoln—in his epically colorful canvases. Using multiplicity as a governing principle, Slonem has created a body of work as inimitable—and wildly colorful—as it is recognizable. Slonem will discuss the myriad influences and overarching themes of his career, followed by a signing of the new monograph, The Worlds of Hunt Slonem.

4 PM FABRIK MAGAZINE | The Inter-Influence of Art and Design
This panel will discuss the relationship of fine art and utilitarian design in contemporary society. Art and design are two fields of creative endeavor that parallel and closely resemble each other.  They interact and interface less than one might suspect — or one might prefer. What kind of place does art have in design? What kind of place does utilitarian design — indeed, utilitarian thinking — have in fine art? These questions are just a starting point for this discussion. Panelists include: Linda Allen, Interior Designer; Rex Bruce, Director, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA); Brad Howe, Artist; Stefan Lawrence, Designer and Founder of Twentieth; and Leonardo Ledesma, Art Consultant. Moderated by: Peter Frank, Art Critic and Curator.

Friday, January 20
2 PM DWELL | Homes for Artists and Art Collectors
Together with her co-panelists – an art collector and two architects – Dwell Deputy Editor Jaime Gillin peeks inside homes designed for artists and art collectors, and explores the ways residential architecture can best highlight and display art.  Panelists include: Jaime Gillin, Deputy Editor at Dwell; Linda Taalman, Architect; Taalman Koch, Architecture; Tom Marble, Architect, Marbletecture; and Jeff Wardell, Art Collector and Director of Chester’s Blacksmith Shop.

4 PM ARTILLERY | A Matter of Degrees: MFA, PhD in Art: Is it all BS?
A panel discussion moderated by Tulsa Kinney, editor of Artillery: Killer Text on Art. Art schools have become big business, churning out career artists ready for the explosive art market. But the graduates walk away with colossal student loans, often in the six-digit figures. Is it worth it? Is it necessary? Does it guarantee success in the art world?  Participating panelists: Betty Ann Brown, Jane Chafin, Tucker Neel, Anuradha Vikram, and Austin Young.

Saturday, January 21
12 PM Art Collection in Modern Day China
A lecture by Mr. Li Feng, Vice Director of Mingsheng Museum of Art, about Chinese Contemporary Art Collections. Sponsored by Playhut and BZ Gallery.

2 PM ART NEWS | The Emergence of Los Angeles as an Art Center
A conversation with Milton Esterow, publisher of Art News Magazine; collector Dean Valentine; gallery owner José Tasende; and Dorit Straus, art specialist at Chubb Personal Insurance. This panel is sponsored by Chubb Personal Insurance.

6 PM RE-CREATING FEMINISM: Performance and Politics 1977/2012
Lively discussion between artist Audrey Chan, Leslie Labowitz-Starus, and other artists exploring connections between the current interest in performance re-creation and its relationship to feminism past and present.

Sunday, January 22
12 PM Early Experiments: Performance and Feminism in Social Practice Art
A panel discussion with artist Suzanne Lacy; Catherine Wood, Tate Modern Curator of Contemporary Art/Performance; scholar Meiling Cheng, University of Southern California; and Andrew Perchuk, Deputy Director, Getty Research Institute, investigating how early works, including Lacy’s original Three Weeks in May public artwork, set the stage for the new wave of social art practices of today. Moderator: Carol Stakenas, Executive Director of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions).

2 PM art ltd. | Pacific Standard Time: Successes and Opportunities
A panel discussion with leading critics, gallerists, and curators debating the merits of the PST initiative and its success in branding Los Angeles nationally and internationally as a post-war art center.  Panelists include: Peter Frank, LA critic and curator; Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, author of Rebels In Paradise and “PST” commentator on NPR; Leah Lehmbeck, Associate Curator, Norton Simon Museum; and Frank Lloyd, owner of Frank Lloyd Gallery. Moderated by George Melrod, Editor, art ltd. Magazine.

Los Angeles Art Show Announces New Vision for 2012 Art Event

West Coast’s Most Significant Art Fair Launches Two New Shows in January; The Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional and The LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary

(August 2011 – Los Angeles, CA) The Los Angeles Art Show has announced an exciting new vision for its January 2012 art event.  The West Coast’s largest and most all-encompassing art fair will debut two separate shows, The Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional (HAT) and the LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary (MAC).  Both shows will take place January 18 – 22, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in West Halls A and B, alongside the International Fine Print Dealer’s Association Print Fair (IFPDA). A unique art experience, one ticket will gain admittance to all three shows.

After more than 16 years of unprecedented success and exceptional sales, Los Angeles Art Show executives identified a need to separate the encyclopedic show to accommodate the burgeoning interest by exhibitors and the public. The two new shows will expand Los Angeles’ art marketplace and appeal to an expanding audience. The 2011 show reported more than 25 million dollars in transactions and 40,000 art enthusiasts in attendance.

“We are excited to debut both the Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional and the LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary,” states Kim Martindale, Producer of both art shows. “We’ve set the highest standards for these shows and created an atmosphere where both historic and contemporary arts can thrive separately.  Collectors and visitors will easily be able to find the art disciplines they prefer, but also have the opportunity to explore the other shows and expand their view.”

Introducing The Los Angeles Fine Art Show:  Historic and Traditional (HAT)

The Los Angeles Fine Art Show provides a new perspective on traditional and historic works and fills a gap in the existing art market, providing strong opportunities for collectors and galleries. Designed to maximize the collector experience, this Historic and Traditional Show is sharply focused on a genre of like-works that will include pre-20th century works, impressionism, plein air paintings and drawings, as well as a selection of contemporary realism.

“Collectors who are interested in what is often called ‘traditional art’ are not simply interested in works from a particular time period.  They are interested in representational art.  We’ve crafted the Los Angeles Fine Art Show:  Historic and Traditional to include galleries and works that these collectors will find appealing.  They’ll be able to view an entire art fair focused on the art that they love,” states Kim Martindale, producer of the Los Angles Fine Art Show:  Historic and Traditional.

Vetted for quality and authenticity, The Los Angeles Fine Art Show:  Historic and Traditional has enlisted leading specialists including Howard Rehs and George Stern to aid in this process.

Meet the New LA Art Show:  Modern & Contemporary

The Los Angeles Art Show, is the premier place to spot new art trends in the West.  The 2010 show  was the first important art event to debut  live Street Art performances and exhibitions, which have now catapulted into the mainstream.  The 2011 Show put an eye on China, showcasing galleries and artists that had never exhibited in the Western World.   The new LA Art Show Modern & Contemporary will continue to push the envelope and bring in artists and exhibitions that will increasingly define the art world.

Momentum continues to grow for this show that has helped define the Los Angeles Art scene for the past sixteen years.  The new LA Art Show:  Modern & Contemporary is committed to showing the highest quality works ranging from Ed Ruscha, Armando Romero, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Arshile Gorky, Jim Dine, Andy Warhol, Fernando Botero and others. Once an encyclopedic show, the new LA Art Show will be honed and edited to showcase top caliber galleries featuring modern and contemporary works by established and emerging artists.

A destination for art, Los Angeles is a hub for collectors and artists alike.  The new LA Art Show:  Modern & Contemporary meets the needs of the global gallery community and provides heightened opportunities for serious collectors, as well as the local arts community.  Designed to showcase cutting-edge artwork as well as forward thinking artists, this exciting new show will feature performance pieces, mixed media installations, video installations, contemporary paintings and sculptures, and a series of curated special exhibitions.

Vetted to ensure quality, the LA Art Show:  Modern & Contemporary was developed with the contemporary collector in mind.  A show of like genres, collectors will be able to visit top galleries that feature the art that they are interested in, and also visit two other shows with the same ticket.

The IFPDA PRINT FAIR

The 27th Annual IFPDA Print Fair will return and take place in conjunction with the Los Angeles Fine Art Show.   The internationally acclaimed Fair provides collectors and art lovers a comprehensive look at Prints in all techniques; from woodcut, engraving and etching to mezzotint, drypoint and lithography.  Juxtaposing many periods and movements, visitors will have an opportunity to view and purchase fine prints from a broad spectrum that includes Old Masters, German Expressionist, antique and modern Japanese, 18th and 19th-century European, 19th-century American, American Regionalist, and Latin American. Prices range from under $500 to more than $50,000.

One Ticket, Three Shows:  The Complete Art Experience

Admission to either The Los Angeles Fine Art Show:  Historic and Traditional, the LA Art Show:  Modern & Contemporary or the IFPDA Print Fair includes complementary admission to the other two shows.  A compete art experience, visitors will be able to view three very focused shows, which combined will cover every aspect of art.

The art shows will all feature top galleries and programming including lectures, tours, special exhibits, and a number of hot-ticket mixers.  All three shows will launch with an Opening Night Premiere Party on January 18, highlighting the show’s Bringing Art to Kids and Kids to Art cause overlay that is benefitting the Art of Elysium and making Los Angeles area Title One School visits to The Getty Museum possible.

Los Angeles:  A Destination for Art

From the new Broad Museum, to the Getty, MOCA & LACMA, Los Angeles boasts some of the world’s top museums, galleries and artists. The Los Angeles Art Show plays host to an international art-buying public, reconfirms the ambitions and commitment of LA’s homegrown collectors, and further defines the city of Los Angeles as a global art-hub.  A hotbed of creativity, trends that take place here are seen the world over.

Both The Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional and the LA Art Show: Modern & & Contemporary will take place on January 18-22, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, West Halls A and B, 1201 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015.  For additional information about the Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional, please visit www.www.LosAngelesFineArtShow.com.  For additional information about the LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary, please visit www.LAArtShow.com.  To learn more about The Art of Elysium, please visit www.theartofelysium.org.  General admission to the Los Angeles Art Show is $20.
